Legendary Cuban singer-songwriter Pablo Milanés has died in Madrid, Spain, at the age of 77, Cuban state media reported.

Milanés, one of the most prominent representatives of Nueva Trova Cubana, has been admitted to a Madrid hospital for several days.

The artist suffered from poor health, kidney disease, etc., for which he underwent a kidney transplant in 2014.

Pablo Milanés was born in Bayamo (Eastern Cuba) in 1945 and, together with Silvio Rodríguez, is a member of the Cuban Nueva Trova movement greatest exponent of , a movement that arose in the 1960s following Fidel Castro’s revolution, combining popular island rhythms with political content.

For most of his career, the singer has expressed similar thoughts to the Cuban government, despite major differences with his country’s authorities.
